SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate mom wants to share her son’s memory with the community.
“God gave him to me only for a short period of time – 17 years – but in those 17 years, we accomplished a lot,” said Latonia Hollis.
Family, friends, and school faculty held a vigil honoring him at Barnet Park Wednesday.
Rico Matthews was killed in accident on Friday when his moped collided with a truck.
His mom says that he begged her to buy the moped with money he’d earned from working at a Wendy’s.
“He wanted that moped so badly. I said Rico I don’t think you need to get that moped, and he was like please momma I’ve never had anything please, I’ve saved up 800 dollars, please let me get it,” said Hollis.
Matthews was also involved in JROTC at Spartanburg High, and Junior Leadership Spartanburg.
His funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at Kingdom New Life Deliverance church at 3:00 p.m. in Spartanburg.
