GREENWOOD, SC (WSPA) – A newborn who died tested positive for cocaine and now the mom is being charged with neglect, according to Greenwood police.
Police were called to Self Regional after the baby died on May 26, according to an incident report.
A nurse told them the baby was born with a heart defect.
She told them she did not know the cause of death because the autopsy hadn’t been done.
The nurse told them the mom and the child both tested positive for cocaine.
Deputies talked to the mom, Najah Marie Rouse, 20, and asked her about her drug use.
She told them that she smoked marijuana for the first five months of her pregnancy because that was the only way she had an appetite.
They told her that she tested positive for cocaine and she denied using it while she was pregnant, but said she had been around it.
She is charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.
