GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – Crews have returned to the lake where they spent several hours searching for a suspect who deputies say did not resurface after he jumped into the water while they tried convincing him to return to the shore.
Around 1 a.m. Saturday, several deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fight with weapons at 1110 Apalache Street.
Deputies arrived to find the victim, who informed them that he and suspect had been drinking and got into a fight. The victim also told deputies that the suspect ran towards Apalache Lake behind the incident where the location happened.
Deputies searched the area and found the suspect in the lake on either a makeshift boat or floating dock. He appeared grossly intoxicated and while deputies were trying to convince him to return to the shore, they say the suspect jumped off the floating device and tried to swim while pulling the device.
Two deputies woke up a nearby resident who allowed them to use his boat in an effort to reach the suspect.
“Before deputies could get out to suspect, they observed him go under the water and never resurface. The Department of Natural Resources, EMS, Tyger River Fire Department, and the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team have been on the scene all night and this morning in the effort to find suspect,” Lt. Kevin Bobo with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The search effort was called off shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday due to the heat and because crews had worked all night. Firefighters resumed their search Sunday morning.
