SAN JOSE (KRON) — Zachary Chuen, 19, was arrested Wednesday night in connection with the beating of an 88-year-old woman during a home invasion robbery in San Jose, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Authorities are still trying to determine if Chuen, who is a resident of San Jose, had any accomplices, said Under-sheriff Carl Neusel.

“This was a heinous crime committed by a heartless individual,” Neusel said.

The woman’s granddaughter said her grandmother is a loving woman who has lived in the house since 1964.

“People deserve to be safe in their homes,” the granddaughter said, fighting back tears.

“This is the most deplorable act I have ever witnessed in my entire life,” the victim’s nephew Michael Wallace said.

“She has a right to enjoy the peace and tranquility of her house,” said Wallace, a pastor at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland.

The home invasion happened Monday night at a home in the 200 block of North Cragmont Avenue shortly before 8 p.m., according to Santa Clara County Sheriff’s officials.

Deputies found 88-year-old Florence “Flo Douglas” severely beaten and robbed.

Douglas was taken to a hospital where she was placed in an intensive care unit for significant head and facial trauma, according to authorities.

She is still in critical condition as of Thursday morning.

Deputies say they were able to make an arrest thanks to the quick actions of neighbors, who noticed something was wrong and called 9-1-1.

Physical evidence located at the scene of the crime lead the arrest of Chuen, authorities said.

Deputies are now asking for anyone who may have any information or surveillance video in the area to contact them.
