(WIAT) – Two students in a California classroom chose not to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Their teacher’s reaction? To dock their grades for it.
The students, one of whom is Native American, had participation points taken away from them by the teacher.
“She says that it represents the military and that they risked their lives for us,” explains Leilani Thomas, one of the students who lost points.
Her response to those comments, “I always tell her, ‘Well, my people risked our lives for our freedom, for our land, for our rights.’”
The school district says it’s dealing with the teacher. The two students have been moved to another class.
