SEASIDE PARK, NJ (CBS News/WSPA) – Police say a pipe bomb exploded in a plastic garbage can Saturday morning in Seaside Park.
The boardwalk and beach area was immediately evacuated and bomb-sniffing dogs sent in to search the area. Dozens of homes were also evacuated.
According to reports, Investigators found other devices “wired together” in the same garbage can that did not detonate.
There are no reports of any injuries
Officials say runners in the “Semper Five” run were expected to pass by the area around the time the blast occurred but the start of the race had been delayed after an unattended backpack was found.
The FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and New Jersey state police were part of the investigation into the incident.
The Semper Five run is a 5K benefiting Marines and Sailors.
