UNION, S.C. (WSPA)- Police have charged a Union man with domestic violence after they say he tried to choke and drag his girlfriend during an argument.
According to the incident report from Union Public Safety, 32-year-old Omar Jamal Bey was arrested and charged with Domestic Violence-2nd Degree.
Police say they got a call about an assault at an apartment on Chambers Avenue Thursday night.
A woman told police Bey, her boyfriend, had been living there with her for more than a year. She said they got into an argument after he saw another man in the car with her earlier in the day.
According to the report, she started gathering all of Bey’s things and asked him repeatedly to leave. She said during the argument, Bey grabbed her neck with both hands and pushed her against the door.
At that point, she tried to grab a stand-up speaker to get him off. Bey let go and she continued packing his things when she slipped and fell, according to the report.
Police say Bey then began dragging her on the floor and tried to pull her outside of the apartment.
The woman’s nephew, who also lives in the home, saw the incident and called her sister for help. The woman then got a kitchen knife and Bey finally left.
Police later found him walking down the road and arrested him. They say the woman had redness around her neck but was otherwise ok physically.
Bey told police he did not put his hands on her that it was just a verbal argument. He was taken to the Union County jail.
