Upstate prepares for around 7500 evacuees due to Hurricane Matthew

(WSPA)- American Red Cross is preparing shelters to take in around 7,500 evacuees Wednesday evening due to Hurricane Matthew.

The first shelter that is opening tonight will be the Spartanburg Expo Center located at Pottery Road.

Part of the High Point Academy campus will be used as an emergency shelter, so parents will have the option to keep students home on Thursday, and it will be an excused absence.

The school will be closed on Friday.

All after-school activities and field trips for Thursday and Friday have been cancelled.

Red Cross will prepare to open more shelters if it is needed.

Anyone that is coming to the shelters needs to bring a blanket, pillow, important documents, medications, medication lists and any other comfort items. All pets should be caged.

American Red Cross is asking that the community contribute finical donations only. They can be made at or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS to 90999 (for a $10 donation)
