3 rescued after being trapped on SUV in NC flooding


FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Three people were rescued in downtown Fayetteville after nearly 15 inches of rain fell on the area.

Two men and a woman were trapped on top of their vehicle in downtown around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday

The trio were waiting on top of what appeared to be a Ford SUV to be rescued.

As of 7 p.m., rescue crews were on the scene nearby and a boat arrived around 7:08 to try to rescue the trio from the rushing waters.

By 7:30 p.m., each person was removed from the SUV one-by-one and were taken safely to dry land.

In Fayetteville overall, Emergency first responders confirm one person is unaccounted for in the city due to high water.

As of 6 p.m., there had been 72 calls for water rescues in the city of Fayetteville alone.

Weather officials said just before 4 p.m. Saturday that 13.4 inches of rain had fallen at the Fayetteville Airport in the last 24 hours.

Also, Fayetteville had the highest winds in the region with a 62 mph gust clocked around 3 p.m. Saturday.
