SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Two vigils in Spartanburg Thursday helped remember the victims of domestic violence.

Those who attended the events at Spartanburg Community College walked by and stopped by every silhouette. Each figure represented a victim of domestic violence in Spartanburg County over the past few years.

Jamie Hughes, College Outreach Advocate for Safe Homes Rape Crisis Coalition says stopping the cycle has to start somewhere.

“You never know when someone that you already know is in trouble, and they’re just not saying anything,” Hughes explained. “They might be embarrassed. They might be ashamed. They might be threatened but just hearing someone else raise awareness about it might give them the opportunity, the opportunity, to come out and say, I need help.”

Hughes says these events do have an impact. He says many times someone comes forward for help or to share their story, after the vigil.
