Man dead after officer-involved shooting in Elbert Co.


ELBERT CO., GA (WSPA) – A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Elbert County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. and it started as a traffic stop involving a Georgia State Patrol Officer.

The stop happened at Georgia Hwy 77 and Red Hill Road.

Troopers say Edwin Amaya Maldonado, 24, of Elberton was driving the car.

They say he was driving without a license and was suspected of driving under the influence.

The trooper tried to arrest Maldonado and he resisted arrest.

They say Maldonado reached for the trooper’s gun belt.

The trooper shot Maldonado once in the torso and he died at the scene.

The trooper is on leave.
