Kidnapping Victim May Need Extensive Therapy

Spartanburg County (WSPA) – The Anderson woman authorities found chained by the neck in a storage container may need to undergo extensive therapy to deal with the emotional scars from her ordeal, according to an Upstate therapist.

Kala Brown and her boyfriend Charlie Carver went missing in August.  Authorities found Brown in a storage container in Woodruff on property belonging to Todd Kohlhepp, Brown’s former employer and a registered sex offender.

Carver is still missing.

Elizabeth Pratt, the clinical director for Safe Homes Rape Crisis Coalition in Spartanburg, said the stress and anxiety stemming from that experience could linger for years.

“When we experience a traumatic event and survive it, we carry the memories emotionally and mentally in our brain but also physically in our bodies,” Pratt said.

Pratt, who is not treating Brown, said treatment said the effects of the trauma could range from depression to nightmares.

Brown was taken to the hospital after her rescue. Her condition is not known.
