Hunting rifle found in student’s car at Laurens District High School

LAURENS, S.C. (WSPA) — School officials say a student will be disciplined after bringing a hunting rifle to school.

A teacher and student saw what appeared to be a rifle sticking out from behind the seat of a student’s car on the campus of Laurens District High School (LDHS) late Wednesday afternoon, a school spokesman said in a statement.

The student was allowed to leave campus before the teacher reported the issue to administration since it was the end of the school day, officials say.

School administrators were advised and a school resource officer went to the student’s home to investigate and speak with his parents.

Principal Sonya Bryant also issued a call alert to LDHS parents about the incident, the spokesman said.

The investigation was complete at 8:15 a.m. Thursday and school officials determined it was an accident.

They say the student had been hunting on Tuesday, which was a school holiday, and forgot to remove the hunting rifle from his vehicle.

The student will be disciplined by the school district in accordance with district and school board policy.
