CHEROKEE CO., S.C. (WSPA) – One man is dead after an accident that happened at the intersection of Jumping Branch Road and Highway 5, near Blacksburg, according to the Cherokee County coroner.
The coroner says 55-year-old Gilberto Aguilar, of York, was heading north on Hwy 5 at about 7:15 a.m. Saturday when he was struck head-on by a Ford pick-up truck that was heading south.
The driver of the pick-up truck apparently fell asleep at the wheel, crossed over the divided median, and hit Aguilar’s car, the coroner says.
Aguilar was pronounced dead at the scene.
He had two passengers who were taken to Spartanburg Medical Center for treatment.
The truck driver was taken to Mary Black Health System in Gaffney. He had no passengers.
An autopsy will be performed to assist with the investigation.
