CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Clemson transfer Marcquise Reed scored 19 points, including seven straight after Georgia cut a double-digit lead to three points with 10 minutes left, for a 74-64 victory in the Tigers’ re-opened Littlejohn Coliseum on Friday night.
Reed, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, was the Northeast Conference rookie of the year for Robert Morris before coming to Clemson and sitting out last year. Reed’s scoring knack was essential in putting away the Bulldogs (0-1).
After William Jackson II hit a pair of 3-pointers to cut a 14-point lead to 51-48 midway through the second half, Reed hit a jumper, stole the ball from J.J. Frazier for another basket, then connected on a 3-pointer to put the Tigers (1-0) ahead by 10.
Georgia never got closer than seven points the rest of the way. Yante Maten led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Frazier, who averaged 16.9 points last year, finished with 11 on 5-of-13 shooting.
