4-year-old accidentally shoots self, mom

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Authorities are investigating a shooting on the north side that sent two to the hospital Sunday morning.

Preliminary investigations have determined that the child accidentally shot herself and her mother when she grabbed a gun from the nightstand and shot herself in the cheek. The bullet then hit her sleeping mother in the back of the head.

The shooting occurred in the 1600 block of East 44th Street just before 8:30 a.m.

“It’s sad. It’s very sad,” said Tosha Renteria, who lives nearby. “It’s senseless and it could’ve been avoided, I believe.”

Police said the girl’s father called 911 after the shooting.

“It’s extremely tragic, obviously we want to make sure we stress the importance of gun safety, it’s critical, we want to make sure if they have guns in the house make sure they lock their guns up, make sure that they’re not exposed where children can grab them or reach them, it’s critical, very critical,” said Aaron Hamer, a spokesman for IMPD.

The 4-year-old child was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health to treat her wounds and is currently in stable condition. The mother is currently undergoing surgery at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Other children were at the residence at the time but were not harmed.

Detectives are investigating to determine what led up to the shooting.

It’s not clear if the parents will face any charges.

If you have guns and children in your home, IMPD suggests:

•    Taking the ammunition out of the gun.
•    Locking the gun and keep it out of reach of kids. Hiding the gun is not enough.
•    Locking the ammunition and store it apart from the gun.
•    Storing the keys for the gun and the ammunition in a different area from where you store household keys. Keeping the keys out of the reach of children.
