PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA)- A transgender student was charged with assault and battery of a school resource officer over a bathroom issue.
According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, it happened August 17th at the Pickens County Career & Technology Center in Liberty.
Deputies say Kinsey Lynn Evans, 18, is a transgender student and approached the school resource officer (SRO) in the cafeteria upset over an incident involving the bathroom that Evans was assigned to. Evans says when she went to use the student male restroom the day before, several male students walked out.
According to the report, Evans told the SRO that last year, the SRO told her she could use any restroom she wanted to. The SRO told Evans, that was not the case, and directed Evans to a faculty member to ask about the bathroom issue.
The report says the SRO was trying to direct Evans away from the crowded cafeteria but the encounter escalated with Evans screaming profanities and shoving the SRO.
The school’s assistant director then restrained Evans, with the help of another faculty member and the SRO handcuffed and arrested the student.
Evans was charged with third-degree assault and battery and disturbing schools and was released on a $1,500 personal recognizance bond on each charge and released.
