COLUMBUS, NC (WSPA) – An evacuation has been lifted and firefighters have a fire 90% contained along I-26 westbound near Columbus, NC.
Polk County deputies asked residents in the Morgan Chapel Village area to evacuate to the Red Cross in Columbus while firefighters worked to get the situation under control. 15 homes were evacuated.
Emergency management said the evacuation was lifted as of 5:30pm.
The fire burned 29 acres in woods and brush near Tryon Estate and Morgan Chapel Village.
Use caution when driving in this area.
By the end of the day Monday, it was reported to be 1,365 acres and 20 percent contained.
It is about 20 miles south of Waynesville, North Carolina, in the headwaters of Crawford Creek.
