ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officials said a man wanted in connection with the death of a 3-year-old child in Elizabethton has been added to the Top 10 Most Wanted list.
According to a TBI news release, Demetrius Deshawn Covington has been added to the list and is wanted by the Elizabethton Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for first-degree murder in connection with the death of the child.
On Monday, Elizabethton Police Department officers charged Covington with aggravated child neglect after a 3-year-old boy — his step-son — was taken to a hospital in critical condition by his mother. The boy reportedly had numerous injuries.
Covington, 28, also known as Demetrius Somerville, had called the child’s mother at work and said the child was injured and asked her to come home.
The child’s mother came home and said her son was having trouble breathing, so she decided to take him to the emergency room.
According to the release, while the mother was headed to the ER, the child’s condition got worse, she stopped and started CPR. The child’s mother reportedly called 911 while stopped on Broad Street performing CPR on the child, and officers and EMS crews arrived and took the child to a local hospital.
On Tuesday, TBI and Elizabethton PD officials confirmed that the 3-year-old boy had died Tuesday as a result of his injuries.
Covington allegedly left the home after the mother left to take her son to the hospital and has not been heard from since.
According to the TBI release, Covington was last seen driving a 2006 white Chevrolet Impala with a Tennessee tag Z31-82E.
TBI also said Covington is a known member of the Bloods street gang and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Covington is 5-foot-7 inches tall and weighs around 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.
A $1,000 reward is also being offered for information leading to Covington’s arrest.
