Furman Rolls To Easy Win

Greenville, S.C. — Sophomore Matt Rafferty tallied 18 points and 14 rebounds as Furman outscored Hiwassee, 56-16, in the paint en route to a 98-48 victory over the Tigers in non-conference men’s basketball action on Friday night at Timmons Arena.

 

Rafferty, a native of Hinsdale, Ill., connected on 8-of-11 field goal attempts and both trips to the charity stripe, while pulling down a career-high 14 boards. Forward Geoff Beans added 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting from three-point range and forward Kris Acox netted 13 points to go with seven rebounds as the Paladins fashioned a 54-27 edge on the glass.

 

Furman (3-3) connected on its first eight shots of the game to build a 21-11 lead on Andrew Brown’s trey with 14:15 to go in the first half. After carrying a 47-25 lead into the locker room, the Paladins opened the second half on a 25-5 run to up their lead to 72-30 when Acox finished on the fast break with a dunk with 12:17 to play.

 

Daniel Fowler scored 11 points to join Rafferty, Beans and Acox in double figures, while Brown and Jordan Lyons added nine points apiece. Freshman Tre Clark tallied seven points, seven rebounds and three assists off of the bench.

 

The Paladins shot 56.7% from the floor and hit 7-of-11 second half treys to finish 10-for-24 from beyond the arc. Furman held Hiwassee to 29.3% shooting, including a 4-for-20 effort from three-point range. Ben Snider led the Tigers with 10 points

 

Furman returns to action on Wednesday, November 30, when it travels to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Big South Conference preseason favorite Winthrop.
