SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) – Devin Watson made two interceptions in the fourth quarter, Tyler Vaughn had a safety just before halftime and Wofford held off Charleston Southern 15-14 on Saturday in the opening round of the FCS playoffs.
Wofford will face The Citadel, the sixth seed, next Saturday.
Charleston Southern started its last drive with 3:03 remaining in the fourth quarter from the 48-yard-line but the Buccaneers lost yards on first down after a sack. On second down, Darius Hammond broke several tackles for a 13-yard reception. Charleston Southern was whistled for a false start on third-and-short but freshman receiver Kameron Brown made a first down with a 12-yard grab.
Then freshman quarterback Shane Bucenell threw his second interception of the game and Devin Watson returned it to the Bucaneers’ 24-yard line to seal it. Watson also cut a route and tip-toed the sideline for an interception with 14 minutes left.
Lorenzo Long carried it 27 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns for Wofford (9-3), which has won 14 straight in the series. His 32-yard score was the go-ahead with 2:32 left in the third.
Bucenell opened the scoring for Charleston Southern (7-4) when he connected with Jared Scotland for a 7-yard touchdown. Bucenell put the Buccaneers in front 14-8 early in the third on a 2-yard keeper. His rushing TD was setup by Hammond’s 51-yard carry.
