PENDLETON, SC (WSPA) – A former Oconee County deputy was arrested after Anderson County deputies say he cut his girlfriend with a knife during an argument over a cell phone.
Anthony Wheeler was charged with first degree Domestic Violence after the fight at 11:00pm on Thanksgiving at his home in Pendleton.
According to the incident report, the couple began arguing over a cell phone before Wheeler pulled out a knife and pushed it against his girlfriend’s chest before she grabbed the knife to protect herself and was cut in her hand and wrist.
Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw released a statement on the matter, stating that he terminated Wheeler after he was told of the situation.
Crenshaw provided this statement to 7News: “Mr. Wheeler is a former deputy. I was notified about an incident in Anderson County around 1:00 a.m. on Friday November 25th. Based upon the facts that were relayed to me, I made the decision to terminate Mr. Wheeler immediately not knowing at the time if criminal charges would be filed by Anderson County. I was very disappointed in the decisions he made given the stance that I have taken against domestic violence. I realize our sworn deputies are human and mistakes will be made. However, I have made it very clear in my mission statement for the Sheriff’s Office that we will maintain high standards of accountability. I will continue to hold our staff to a higher standard. ”
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Wheeler was employed there from February 2013 until November 2016. He was originally a uniform deputy before moving to the narcotics unit. Most recently, Wheeler was assigned to the school resource unit last week.
The Sheriff says his staff “was not aware of any issues going on in his personal life.”
