SALEM, SC (WSPA) – A woman’s body was pulled from Lake Jocassee after a car went into the lake at Devils Fork State Park.
According to Oconee County Emergency Services, the call came in around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Crews found the body in the car about 100 feet from a motorized boat ramp.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said a woman was found in the rear seat of 2004 Kia Optima.
Crews tried to resuscitate the woman, but it was too late. Addis said the 60-year-old Anderson woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities think she drove her car or allowed it to roll down the boat ramp into the lake. Her family also provided information to park rangers that suggested the woman may have drove her car into the lake, Addis said.
A passersby found the woman’s pocketbook with identification around noon Thursday at the boat ramp and turned the items over to park rangers. Addis said it was a park ranger who discovered the car underwater after searching near the boat ramp.
Additional family members needed to be contacted as of Thursday night. The family provided history to the coroner’s office that supports this death is consistent with being a suicide by drowning.
This death remains under investigation by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department and the Oconee County Coroner’s Office. The S..C Highway Patrol also assisted.
