Gaffney council votes down performing arts center

Gaffney city council meeting

GAFFNEY, S.C. (WSPA) – Gaffney city leaders have closed the curtain on a new performing arts center.

Monday’s council meeting was packed with supporters for the $5 million project.

slack-for-ios-upload-3Mayor Henry Jolly says the money to pay for it would come from the hospitality tax and other fundraising efforts.

In the end, council voted 4 to 3 against something the arts community says is needed to help its youngest residents take to the stage.

“It’s sad right now they’re in a building where it’s falling in,” said supporter Cathy Parker. “I’m just saddened that our community doesn’t believe that we need to move forward and progress.”

Mayor Jolly supports the performing arts center, and says this decision does not mean the end of efforts to build one.
