Deputy Dempsey presented with Purple Heart during awards ceremony

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – It was a very special night for Greenville County Deputy Dave Dempsey.

He was honored with a Purple Heart from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office at an annual awards ceremony, Thursday night.

The honor was a surprise to Dempsey, who was shot in the head nearly one year ago while responding to a call.

“A long year for Dave, a long year for his family to go through so much rehabilitation,” said Sheriff Steve Loftis, “I’m just proud of the progress that he has made and I feel it is an extreme honor to present him with a Purple Heart Award tonight.”

The annual awards ceremony is usually held in the spring but officials say they wanted to hold it early to honor Sheriff Loftis who was recently defeated in his bid for re-election.
