Chapman Wins, B. Springs Falls In State Title Games

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Carlos Montalvo-Corra hit a 43-yard field goal with 9:30 left and Chapman held on to defeat four-time defending state champion Dillon for a 29-27 victory in the South Carolina Class 3A high school championship on Saturday, the Panthers first ever football title.

Dillon, which won its state championships at Class 2A level before getting reclassified this season, looked like it would continue the run when it took a 27-24 lead on Brayden Hawkins 19-yard touchdown pass to Murishi Irankunda late in the third quarter.

The Panthers (12-3) inched closer with a safety to start the final period, then hung on after Montalvo-Corra’s kick. Chapman allowed Dillon only 71 yards on four fourth-quarter drives after the go-ahead field goal.

DJ Twitty ran for 202 yards and two touchdowns for Chapman.

Johnny Hawkins led Dillon with 188 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

In the 5A game, Ron Hoff ran for two touchdowns and caught a 62-yard TD pass to lead Dutch Fork to its second straight state title with a 28-21 victory over Boiling Springs.

Hoff started the scoring for the Silver Foxes (15-0) with a 4-yard run then extended the lead to 21-7 in the second quarter with a 62-yard touchdown pass from Reese Nichols.

Hoff capped the Dutch Fork scoring and put them ahead to stay with a 5-yard run in the third quarter.

Nichols finished with 293 yards passing and two touchdowns. Bobby Irby had six catches for 121 yards and a 9-yard TD pass from Nichols.

Boiling Springs (14-1) was playing for its first state championship. Trailing 28-21 in the final four minutes, but came up short on fourth down on their last drive.
