Landfill fire in Newberry Co. contained, to be out soon

NEWBERRY, SC (WSPA) – A fire at a Newberry County landfill has been contained and should be completely out by 9:00pm, according to officials.

The landfill caught fire early Sunday morning and was causing concern for air quality as crews worked throughout the day to put out the blaze.

The landfill holds construction debris and is located on SC 121 near Belfast Rd.

The Sheriff’s Office says air quality will continue to improve as wind dissipates the smoke.

Deputies say a contractor is in place and has been using dirt and clay to cover the fire and put it out since this afternoon.

Schools in the area have been inspected and operations should continue as normal on Monday.
