COLUMBIA, SC (WSPA) – A Laurens man pleaded guilty in Federal court to a marriage fraud conspiracy where he was paid thousands to help a Brazilian immigrant get United States citizenship.

39-year-old Jason Bolt put in a guilty plea Monday in Federal court in Florence for Conspiracy to Commit Marriage Fraud.

According to the US Attorney’s Office, Bolt was paid between $9,000 and $10,000 to enter into the fraudulent marriage with one of the Brazilian defendants who was eventually successful in getting US citizenship.

They say this was part of a conspiracy involving a number of Brazilian immigrants who paid for marriages to get United States citizenship.

Bolt and the Brazilian were in staged photos and claimed they lived together in fraudulent affidavits.

Bolt faces up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of $250,000.
