Upstate motocross track appeals county violation

ENOREE, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate motocross track is fighting to keep its doors open.

An online petition has hundreds of people supporting Club Mole Creek in Spartanburg County. County leaders say the track does not have the permit to operate.

Chris Forman has been riding most of his life. “Since I was like 10 years old,” he said.  All he has to do is walk out to his backyard.

“I just love it,” he said. “Once you ride, even if you don’t ever race or anything like that, it’s just the best feeling ever.”

Chris’s dad, George Foreman, says it was a feeling they wanted to share with others when they built the mile-long track in Enoree several years ago.

“This is an individual sport. It teaches kids the discipline, the focus,” he said.

County leaders said the issue is Club Mole Creek charges for those lessons. Foreman says there is an entrance fee on weekends. “The sport itself is very, very expensive,” he said.

County leaders say a complaint from a resident alerted them to send a notice of violation.

spartanburg-county-ordinanceA statement to 7 News from Spartanburg County District 4 Councilman Whitney Farr reads:

“According to staff they are using part of their property for a motocross operation without a permit. Based on their Facebook page they are charging for the riders to come out use this track. With it being a paying event it falls under a commercial operation subject to the unified land management ordinance and section 3.10 being a part of that. They are supposed to appear before the land ordinance appeals committee later this month.”

Section 3.10 pertains to motor speedways or testing tracks, saying “Dirt tracks shall not be permitted.”

“This is more recreational than competitive,” said George Foreman, who added that he did not know of the required permit.

“It’s kind of a punch in the gut, you know,” said Chris Forman. “We put a lot of time and effort into this place.”

The county’s land management board of appeals will hear the case at its March 28th meeting. That meeting starts 4:30 p.m. at the council chambers on North Church Street.
