Christine Scarpelli and Photographer Ryan spent the morning downtown talking about local businesses and events this weekend.

At the Main Street Junction, advisory board members felt it was important to embrace their history and they have old photos of the area on the walls of the building.

Advisory Committee Member Audrena Powell-Baker said the Main Street Junction is a building where events and meetings take place.

Downtown you’ll find the Union County Arts Council and the Union County Museum.

This building is full of old war history and organizers said this is where you can learn more about historic sites like the Cross Keys House and the Rose Hill Plantation.

Diaries from the 1800’s report the Cross Keys House is one of the oldest homes in the state and was host at one time to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

“History is important to Union County we’ve built culture and our tourism on our history and it makes sense to continue that,” said Powell-Baker.

Mayor Harold Thompson said the Timken Company continues to provide financial support and employment in the area. City leaders said the Timken Sports Complex is a tool used by the tourism commission to host tournaments and the local Miracle League.

“It’s huge we have people from North Carolina as well as SC that bring their children to play so it’s a great asset for us,” said Curtis’s Hunter, Tourism Director.

Festivals and events also bring in visitors like the Uniquely Union Festival, Southern Treeing Walker Days with coon dogs competing for first prize and Big Buck ATV and bike racing. That event happens March 4 and 5.

Leaders on the campus of USC Union said they will grow and feed off momentum from the changing downtown too.
