Southside Boys Wins State Title; Wren Boys & CCES Girls Come Up Short

3A Boys State Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Jalen McKelvey scored 19 points as Southside fought off Dillon 65-57 to win the South Carolina Class 3A boys basketball championship on Saturday.

Southside, which led by as many as 14 points, saw its lead cut to 59-55 with 59 seconds to play. McKelvey came up big at the foul line after that, making four of the team’s final six free throws to hold on to the win.

Tuzion Brock had 15 points and RJ Campbell 13 for Southside.

Dillon struggled with its shots all game, finishing at under 30 percent from the field (20-of-71, 28.2 percent). Keenan Norman led the way with the 13 points coming on five of 17 shooting. Javier Brookins had eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Dillon.


4A Boys State Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Clyde Trapp Jr. had 20 points including six foul shots in the final 40 seconds as Lower Richland held off Wren to win the South Carolina Class 4A basketball championship on Saturday night.

The Diamond Hornets (21-4) had rallied from nine points down to lead Wren 45-40 with 1:02 to go. Isaac Ford’s layup tightened things up even more as Wren drew within three points. That’s when Trapp began his steady stream of foul shots to keep Lower Richland on top. He went 6-of-10 from the line during that final stretch.

Wren (23-5) missed all three of its shots in the last 40 seconds to thwart a comeback.

John Kanaan had 15 points to lead Wren.


2A Girls State Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Janell Sinab scored 18 points to lead Mullins to a 62-50 victory over Christ Church for the South Carolina Class 2A girls basketball championship on Saturday.

Mullins (20-2) was successful despite shooting 17-of-58 for 29.3 percent and losing the rebounding battle 44-39, but Christ Church (26-3) committed 38 turnovers in the defeat.

Brittani McDonald had 16 points and Serenity Hunt 15 for the Auctioneers, who led by 14 points at halftime and never let their lead fall to fewer than eight points from there.

Lawren Cook had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Christ Church. Bailey Breazeale had 16 points off 8-of-12 shooting and also had nine rebounds.
