Fmr. postal worker pleads guilty on tax charge


COLUMBIA, SC (WSPA) – US Attorney Beth Drake says Lawrence Singleton, 60, of Columbia, pleaded guilty to one count of interfering with the administration of tax laws.

Drake says Singleton is a former United States Postal Employee with ties to the “sovereign citizen” movement.

“Sovereign citizens” are U.S. citizens who claim not to recognize the authority of federal, state or local governments, according to Drake.

Singleton fraudulently filed an identity theft affidavit with the Internal Revenue Service claiming that his identity had been stolen and that it changed his tax liability, according to the news release.

Drake says Singleton attempted to pay a $72,000 tax bill using a fraudulent check.

Singleton tried to deposit a fraudulent check worth hundreds of thousands of dollars’ into a bank account and he used a similar bogus check to try to buy an automobile, according to Drake.

Singleton has not been scheduled, but he faces up to 3 years and a $5,000 fine, according to the news release.
