TAYLORS, S.C. (WSPA) – The brunt of the hail blew through Tuesday during rush hour when thousands of cars were on the roads leaving work. Countless cars saw windshields busted and body damage in the Taylors and Greer area.
JD Davis was teaching class at Pivotal Fitness in Taylors when hail destroyed many cars in the parking lot, including her own.
“We heard the sounds start. We knew it was more than just rain,” said Davis. “Several of the class members went out and came back with just golf ball sized hail in their hands. Bigger than their palms.”
By the time Davis got to check out her car, all she could do was cringe.
“My windshield was hit in many places and is completely cracked and the car just had damage all over it.”
Unfortunately, her two year old Toyota Highlander was badly damaged in a hailstorm in Taylors last year, too.
“It did significant damage to my car at that time. Had to have it completely done and this time the damage is much worse,” said Davis.
It’s a similar story across the Greer and Taylors area. Greer resident, Sam Manley got caught driving in it.
“It sounded like bombs going off,” said Manley. “You’re in a metal car and its echoing. It’s loud and each pop, you think the window is going to break on the next one.”
Manley caught the scary storm on video. It shows hail piling up like snow.
His windshield was spared, unlike Alex Hyman’s family car. Cracks stretch out in streaks.
“I was just amazed at that much damage in a relatively short amount of time,” said Hyman.
The damage has insurance adjusters working overtime, many telling 7News it can be at least a two day waiting period before you see anyone.
For JD Davis, she learned something new about her coverage.
“People think that your South Carolina law covers your windshield break without a deductible, which would be true if that was your only claim, but most people that were in the hail yesterday didn’t just suffer a windshield break,” said Davis.
South Carolina Insurance Brokers remind drivers that your windshield repair is covered without a deductible only if you have comprehensive coverage. If you have body damage, too, some providers may not allow two separate claims for auto repair.
“At the end of the day, I wasn’t hurt. I know there could be way much worse things that could happen. It’s only money. You can’t take it with you,” said Davis
Many auto body shops and police are reminding people to always check out people offering services to fix damaged cars and property. Know who you’re dealing with before you give them your money to avoid fraud.
