Spartanburg business fire under investigation

Crews responded early Monday morning to a fire in Spartanburg (WSPA).

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Crews are investigating what caused a fire at a Spartanburg commercial building.

The call came in around 3:30 a.m. Monday by someone passing by the intersection of Heywood Avenue and E. Main Street.

Spartanburg City Fire Marshall Brad Hall said smoke and flames were coming from the building by the time crews arrived at the building at 763 E. Main St. Firefighters say the blaze was in the basement and second floor of the building.

Hall says no one was found inside, but there may have been someone staying in the building.

There was evidence that someone may have been sleeping in the basement. “However, that part was isolated from the rest of the house so we don’t believe anything was involved there,” he added.

There are some businesses listed on a sign outside the building.

Hall said a hair salon was in the building. He said other businesses listed on the sign were no longer there. Hall said the hair salon had planned to move out by the end of the month and lost several possessions in Monday morning’s fire.

The cause of the fire had not been determined shortly before noon Monday.

“We have two possibilities, arson and electrical, but we will need laboratory examination and testing to get any further in our conclusions,” Hall wrote in an email.

East Main Street in Spartanburg was closed early Monday after a fire (WSPA).
