RUTHERFORD Co., N.C. (WSPA) — A husband and wife facing criminal charges have resigned from their teaching positions, and one has surrendered their teaching license.
William Travis Toms, 44, and his wife, Rebecca Toms, 33, were recently charged in connection to a minor’s photo in a sexual exploitation investigation.
Travis Toms was charged with second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, while Rebecca Toms was charged with common law obstruction of justice.
The couple taught at R-S Central High School.
Both teachers had been suspended with pay while the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office investigated the matter. They were suspended without pay after the criminal charges were filed.
Rutherford County Schools Superintendent Janet Mason confirmed Monday that both teachers have resigned.
Mason released the following statement:
Travis Toms and Rebecca Toms resigned from Rutherford County Schools, effective Friday, March 24, 2017. Additionally, Travis Toms surrendered his teaching license to the State Board of Education, also effective Friday, March 24, 2017. Both former employees of the school district were previously suspended with pay, effective Tuesday, February 7, 2017, and suspended without pay, effective Thursday, March 16, 2017.
A 16-year-old has also been arrested in connection to the incident.
