Lyman mayor passes away after long illness

The town of Lyman says Mayor Tony G. Gillespie passed away on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.

Gillespie served as Lyman’s Mayor since July of 2016.

“The Town Council and staff extend their deepest sympathies to the family of Mayor Gillespie. His spirited personality and dedication to the community will be profoundly missed.” said the town.

Gillespie also served on Spartanburg County Council from May 1991 to 1999.

County Councilman David Britt was elected at the same time as Gillespie and says Gillespie helped change Spartanburg forever with his work to bring BMW here. “He will be missed,” Britt said.

“I loved working with Tony because he didn’t take himself too seriously. His love for Spartanburg and Lyman, really showed through with his work and commitment.” Britt said.

Mayor Pro Tempore Larry Chappell will serve as acting Mayor until a special election is held.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lyman Baptist Church.
