State sports rivalry or state pride?

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – The Gamecock men’s and women’s basketball teams are both heading to the Final Four this weekend! This puts them on track to bring home yet another national title for the Palmetto State.

When it comes to sports, Clemson and South Carolina have one of the most heated rivalries in college sports. This weekend, both Gamecock basketball teams are heading to the Final Four, and while another national title for the Palmetto State would be great, can Clemson fans bring themselves to support their number one rival?

There’s been support for the Gamecocks coming from some unlikely places. Clemson football stars Ben Boulware and Shaq Lawson tweeted their support to the Gamecocks Sunday night. But fans can’t forget that USC sent a congratulatory tweet to Clemson after they won the college football national championship.

USC fans say they aren’t expecting support from their Upstate rival.

“I expect they’ll be cheering against us and that’s absolutely fine. That’s how a rivalry goes,” says Gamecock fan TJ Cofield.

“All my Clemson friends [say] ‘Hey congratulations, now let’s talk about football,” says Daniel Peninger.

Clemson fans WSPA talked with say they’ll cheer for the garnet and black, at least for this weekend.

“They’re both from South Carolina, so they’re representing the state of South Carolina, says Clemson fan Steve Ray. “I pull for Clemson in my heart, Clemson had a good year in football, so now South Carolina is excelling in basketball. I just pay attention and watch them and cheer for them now.”

The Gamecock men take on Gonzaga Saturday, and the women play Stanford Friday.
