GREENVILLE Co., S.C. (WSPA) – Travelers Rest police say a man was flown to the Augusta Burn Center after an explosion.
Police and fire were called to Miracle Hill Thrift Store on Roe Center Court near Highway 25 just after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Once on scene, they found a man who had been operating a fork lift inside a storage container.
Police Chief Lance Crowe says they believe the fork lift exploded, severely burning the man.
Miracle Hill says the man being treated at JMS Burn Center in Augusta is Joey Hyatt, 20, of Greenville.
They say his wife issued a statement on his condition:
“Joey made it through the night and met all of the important milestones. Doctors are doing lots of surgeries, removing dead skin in preparation for skin grafts. He is doing well, all things considered. He will be in ICU for two weeks and should be in the hospital for the next 40 days. He is making good progress for what will be a long recovery.”
Miracle Hill says another employee, Mike Walker, helped put out the fire.
They say Walker was burned on his hands. He was treated and released, but will need further treatment and surgery.
South Carolina OSHA is investigating the explosion to see if any OSHA violations may have contributed to the accident. A spokesperson says investigations usually take eight weeks.
