Chase ends in crash, causes gas leak and fire

GREENWOOD Co., S.C. (WSPA) — A gas line ruptured after a police chase across two counties ended in a fiery crash Wednesday night.

The Index Journal reports the chase began in Laurens County and ended when a vehicle crashed at the intersection of Emerald Road North and Kateway in Greenwood.

One vehicle hit a gas line, reportedly causing it to rupture and sparked a blaze.

Firefighters had to wait until utility workers cut off the gas line before they were able to contain the fire.

Corporal Bill Rhyne with the S.C. Highway Patrol said the pursuit began in Laurens County. He said the sheriff’s office requested the Highway Patrol’s assistance when the pursuit entered Greenwood County.

Two Highway Patrol units joined the chase before it soon ended on Emerald Road, Rhyne said.

He said two people were in the vehicle that crashed. Both were taken to the hospital.

Rhyne said the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. However, John Long with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office said that law enforcement agency was also involved in the pursuit and has referred the crash to the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

7News has reached out to the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Laurens County Sheriff’s Office for more information.

Greenwood CPW said crews worked through the night on the ruptured line and their work is expected to continue for a couple days.
