GAFFNEY, S.C. (WSPA) — Fire crews worked through the night to put out a fire that destroyed part of a historic Gaffney church.

The blaze at Bethel Baptist Church started around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Gaffney Fire Chief Jamie Caggiano said the fire crews didn’t leave the church until about 2:30 a.m. Friday.

One fire truck stayed on the scene in case they needed to battle any hot spots.

Chief Caggiano said the fire destroyed the church’s old education wing and sanctuary.

Church members should be able to worship in the new sanctuary, Chief Caggiano said.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire with Gaffney Police Department and the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

SLED arrived at the church at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Chief Caggiano said the fire investigation may continue into next week, and they may not be able to determine the cause of the fire due to extensive damage.

No one was inside at the time or hurt in the fire.
