Man charged in Spartanburg homicide; victim identified

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – The Spartanburg Co. Sheriff’s Office officials said a man has been charged with murder following a reported shooting on California Avenue in Spartanburg Friday afternoon.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, deputies responded to California Avenue around 1:45 p.m. in reference to a reported shooting.

When they arrived, they found a man had suffered several gunshot wounds.

The man — later identified by the Spartanburg Co. coroner’s office as Terry Steven Whiteside, Jr., 38 — was taken by EMS to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The coroner’s office said Whiteside suffered damage to his torso in the shooting and passed away while he was in surgery.

Whiteside’s death has been ruled a homicide by the coroner’s office and an autopsy has been ordered.

A witness at the scene told deputies about the incident and gave information about the suspect — later identified as Patrick James Coggins, of Landrum, SC —  and his vehicle.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina reportedly saw Coggins’ vehicle in a grocery store parking lot and arrested him.

A business owner across the street from the shooting scene said she heard a couple of gunshots and told us she was shocked when a woman came running into the business wanting help and said a man had been shot.

The business owner said they helped the woman call 911.

“It kind of startled me because I didn’t know if he was running behind her, if he was still there,” she said. “I didn’t know what was going on, so it was a real frightening experience.”

Warrants were obtained charging Coggins with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

According to the release, investigators are en route to Polk County to interview Coggins.

The sheriff’s office said a motive for the shooting in unknown at this time.
