1 dead, arrest made after shooting on Patton Ave. in Asheville

ASHEVILLE, NC (WSPA) – One person has died following a shooting in Asheville, N.C. Friday afternoon.

According to Asheville Police Department spokesperson Christina Hallingse, police officers were called around 4:21 p.m. to assist a reported shooting victim who was found at the Dollar General in the 1000 block of Patton Avenue.

The victim has been identified as Clarence Michael Williams, 18 of Asheville. Williams was transported to Mission Hospital for treatment but later died at the hospital due to his injuries from the shooting.

The Asheville Police Department reports that witnesses at the scene saw a yellow SUV flee from the area. The vehicle was later pulled over on Fairview Rd. near Biltmore Village.

According to Hallingse, the person inside the vehicle Derrick Jamal Edwards, 24 of Weaverville, NC was arrested and has been charged with First Degree Murder. He is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center without bond.
