Deputies: 21 go to hospitals in bus pepper spray incident

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say 21 Richland County students were taken to hospitals to be checked after pepper spray was used during a fight on a school bus.

Sheriff’s Lt. Curtis Wilson tells local news outlets the fight broke out between groups of male and female students going to Westwood High School Tuesday morning.

One of the female students used pepper spray during the incident.

Authorities are checking surveillance video to determine what happened. It’s not clear whether she was using the spray to defend herself or to attack other students.

Wilson says it’s not illegal to have pepper spray and whether students can carry it on a bus is up to individual school districts. He says it’s legal to use pepper spray only for protection.
